A Collection of Green Tips from the Palisadian Post
With sincere thanks to the Palisadian Post, which has published and supported our Green Tips for many years.

Consider Composting
Composting at home is one of the simplest ways to cut waste and nourish soil. While LA’s green-bin program collects food scraps, home composting avoids extra truck emissions and produces nutrient-rich fertilizer. Most kitchen scraps—like citrus peels, eggshells, coffee grounds and paper—can be composted, while meat, dairy and produce stickers should be avoided. Set up a small indoor container for scraps and transfer them to a backyard bin, heap or tumbler. Resilient Palisades

The Journey Behind Your Produce

Recycle Your Wardrobe
Recycled clothing is gaining momentum as a sustainable trend. By choosing garments and accessories made from reused materials—like plastics, cotton, cashmere, and metals—we cut down on waste, conserve natural resources, and reduce pollution. Major brands such as Adidas, Patagonia, Bagatiba, and Green Toys are proving that high-quality products can come entirely from recycled materials.

Happy Veganuary!
Veganuary began in 2014 with a simple idea: try eating vegan for 31 days and see how good it feels—for your body, for animals, and for the planet. Participation has now surpassed 600,000 people worldwide. This week’s Green Tip from Resilient Palisades explores why more people are giving it a try and how easy it can be to start.

Eight Billion Humans on Earth
The world just reached eight billion people, but the climate crisis is not driven equally by everyone. Plastic Recycling is a Myth
While global plastic production is increasing at alarming rates, plastic recycling is plummeting in the U.S. In 2021, the U.S. produced 51 million tons of plastic waste but—because countries like China have stopped receiving U.S. plastic—only recycled 2.4 million tons, or 5%.

Turning Over a New Leaf
On behalf of the Resilient Palisades Gas-Free Gardens campaign, we are excited to tell you about our New Leaf Blower Program: Palisadians partnering with their gardeners to go electric!
In California, gas-powered gardening equipment is the dominant source of smog—more than all of the passenger cars on our roads (CA Air Resources Board, 2017). This equipment is also an unnecessary source of greenhouse gases and localized air pollution, including benzene and formaldehyde.

Proposition 30 Explained
Proposition 30 would raise state taxes on Californians who make $2 million or more in a year. The money collected, estimated at $3.5 billion to $5 billion in annual revenue, would be used to subsidize electric cars and charging stations (80% of the funds). The rest would go toward wildfire safety (20% of the funds).

Get Ready to Strike, Palisadians
We have yet to see climate action plans from Los Angeles mayoral candidates. On every level, we need to put pressure on governments to commit to halving emissions from their 2010 levels by 2030 and to net-zero by 2050, as called for by climate scientists.
